Description
This building, known as Boots, is a town house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the early 18th century and has undergone later alterations. The structure is made of coursed limestone rubble and features a hipped stone slate roof with lateral stacks finished in brick. It has a double-depth plan and stands three storeys tall with a two-window range. The front has a 20th-century shop front, and above it are timber lintels over 8-pane sash windows with shutters, along with a moulded wood cornice. The right side wall is similar, and there are comparable windows on the left, which also has a 20th-century extension. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is likely to be of interest. In the 19th century, the building was known as The Temperance Hotel, functioning as a coffee tavern established by the British and Foreign Temperance Society in 1834, and it was used for the Annual Tucker's Feast by the blanket manufacturers.
