Description

The Church of St James is a church built in 1839 by Thomas Greenshields, with a sanctuary added in 1862 by J. Clarke and further alterations made between 1885 and 1889 by H. Drinkwater. It is constructed from squared and coursed limestone, featuring ashlar quoins and dressings, and has a gabled concrete tile roof. The church has a cruciform plan with a west tower and is designed in the lancet style. The east window is a three-light Geometrical-style window. The one-bay chancel, two-bay transepts, and four-bay nave are adorned with lancet windows that have blocks to hood-mould stops. Each gabled end of the transepts features a blind round window above a ribbed door set in similar pointed doorways. The west tower includes ground-floor lancets and hood moulds over a west door, as well as louvred lancets on the first stage. The spire is broached and ribbed ashlar with gablets over trefoiled and louvred lights.

Inside, there are double-chamfered arches in the sanctuary and transepts, along with a similar west doorway. The church contains mid-19th century benches, stalls, a lectern, and a Geometrical-style pulpit. An octagonal Geometrical-style font is located in the south transept, and there is lancet-style panelling in the south porch. The roof features queen-strut trusses with pointed-arched braces. The stained glass includes 20th-century memorial glass.
