Description
Cote Baptist Church is a Baptist church built in the mid-18th century, around 1738. It is constructed from coursed limestone rubble and features a gabled stone slate roof. The church has a one-cell plan and is designed in the Georgian style. The front facade is gabled and two stories high, with a three-window range. A semi-circular arch tops a window with leaded lights, which is flanked by bracketed flat hoods and flat stone arches over 18th-century four-panelled doors. The first floor has similar windows, and above is a flat-topped gable with a plaque and side scrolls. The left side wall and rear wall each have a two-window range with similar windows. To the right is a one-storey range made from the same materials, featuring a stone end stack, a flat stone arch over a plank door, and round-arched windows with leaded lights.
Inside, all fittings were installed in 1859 and include box pews with hinged doors, a gallery with a panelled front supported by corrugated iron posts, and accessed by two sets of 19th-century quarter-turn stairs. The pulpit has a shaped and panelled front, with a reader's desk and lectern located at the west end. There is also a memorial tablet dedicated to Thomas Dunscombe, the pastor who died in 1811. The chapel was originally founded in 1656.
