Description
Milton Lodge is a house dating from 1720, constructed of coursed limestone rubble with a gabled stone slate roof and end stacks finished in brick. The building features a three-unit central-staircase plan and stands two storeys tall with a symmetrical five-window range. A notable feature is the fine stone shell hood over an early 19th-century six-panelled door with an overlight. The windows include four late 18th-century six-pane sashes with keyed flat stone arches to the right and early 18th-century cross windows to the left. At the rear, there is an outshut with a three-light ovolo-moulded wood-mullioned window and two-light chamfered wood-mullioned windows. To the left, the house adjoins a two-storey block from the late 18th or early 19th century, built with similar materials.
Inside, the lodge features panelled shutters and early 18th-century bolection panelled doors. The left side has a stop-chamfered beam and a remodelled open fireplace. The dog-leg staircase with winders showcases fine turned balusters on a closed string. The right side includes a panelled dado and a scribed beam. On the first floor, there is a panelled dado, window seats, and an eared architrave around the fireplace in the right room, along with ribbed doors and panelled cupboards to the left. The roof is supported by butt-purlins.
