Description

The Old Prebendal is a house, possibly of prebendal origin, with medieval roots, evidenced by a large blocked arch window in the south-west gable that may date back to the 13th century. It was remodelled in the late 17th century, restored in the mid 19th century, and modernised in the 20th century. The building features coursed rubble with freestone quoins and dressings, topped with Cotswold stone roofs and a coped verge on the left-hand side. There are two ridge chimneys on the south, with paired ashlar shafts and a common cornice, and a set-back chimney to the left. The house has two storeys and attics, with four gabled dormers. The façade consists of four bays, with the right-hand bay being a mid 19th-century gabled break that has coped verges and kneelers, a transomed first-floor window with four lights, and a six-light window on the ground floor, both featuring relieving arches. The remaining sections of the house have hollow chamfered mullion windows with drips. The doorway is located five bays from the left and is wide, with moulded reveals and panelled oak bivalve doors, along with bullseye panels above. The north-east gable has an angled buttress and a stepped chimney to the left with weathered offsets. Inside, the house retains several fireplaces from the 17th or early 18th century.
