Description

The New House is a house of the late 20th century, constructed of Cotswold stone with stone slate mono-pitch roofs. The plan is composed of five linked pavilions, arranged informally, with each pavilion featuring three external stone walls and a fourth side of glazing. The largest pavilion, located to the north, accommodates the kitchen, dining area, and study. This is connected to the south-west by a sitting room pavilion, from which a covered way extends to two small stores and two loggias in the north-west corner of the garden. Three identical bedroom pavilions, arranged with rotational symmetry, create the east wing of the house, with glazed links connecting them.

The main entrance is on the right side of a three-sided forecourt to the south of the house. The forecourt is flanked by two glazed bays attached at right angles to the large northern pavilion. The three bedroom pavilions rise from an irregular pool that surrounds the house to the east. They feature white-painted timber windows and eaves, with grey opening lights; a large additional window was inserted in 1972 in the kitchen and sitting room to improve garden views.

Internally, the house reveals exposed roof timbers and trusses, brown tiled floors, and window sills. The main northern pavilion contains a built-in kitchen unit with cupboards and counter back, as well as a built-in dining table with bench seating. Each of the three bedrooms has an en-suite bathroom with storage space above.

The garden includes a freestanding Cotswold stone garden wall to the west, topped with a Cotswold stone-tiled pent roof supported by timber. The west-facing side of the wall features an abstract mural created in the 1960s by the artist Paul Atroshenko, later restored by the artist. The eastern side of the house is encircled by a bio-morphic shaped concrete lined pool which serves as a major garden feature. The group value of this building is based on its significant contribution to the architectural heritage of the region.
