Description

The Brize Norton War Memorial is a First World War memorial built by Messrs Knowles and Son of Oxford between 1919 and 1920.

This stone memorial features a four-stepped, octagonal plinth that supports a skirted, square base. The base is topped with an octagonal transition base that has square, chamfered footings and quatrefoil motifs on four of its faces. The bottom step of the plinth has deep, chamfered mouldings at both the top and bottom. The top step is shaped like an eight-pointed star but has octagonal, chamfered footings. Rising from the base is a square-footed, tapering shaft with an octagonal section and moulded, octagonal necking. At the top, there is a decoratively-carved wheel cross with floriated arms.

On the front (south) face of the square base, there is an inscription in relief that reads: "IN GRATEFUL AND LOVING MEMORY/ OF THE BRIZE~NORTON MEN WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR ENGLAND/ AND FREEDOM. 1914~1918." Below this, flanked by a cross pattée on either side, is another relief inscription: “THEIR NAME LIVETH/ FOR EVERMORE.” The other three faces display the names of 18 local men who lost their lives in the First World War. Additionally, a further relief inscription has been added to the skirting of the square base, which reads: "1939 C. J. E. MILLIS 1945."

The enclosing railings are not included in the listing.
