Description

Lowlands Farmhouse is probably from the early 18th century, or possibly with earlier elements, and it was extended and remodelled around 1800. The farmhouse is constructed of coursed squared limestone with wooden lintels, and has a roof of Stonesfield slate and concrete plain tiles, with rebuilt stone gable stacks. It has a L-shaped plan. The front of the farmhouse has three windows, with a narrow window above the central doorway and renewed two-light casements in the outer bays. The ground-floor openings have segmental rubble arches, while the upper windows have lintels. The left gable wall incorporates the outer face of a former projecting stack and returns to the gable wall of the later section. A rear wing, dating from an earlier period, returns from the right, with a single-storey service range extending from it to the right. Inside, there are stop-chamfered spine beams, stairs, joinery and fireplaces dating to around 1800, along with butt-purlin roofs featuring apex-jointed rafters and some ridge pieces. The service range contains a well-preserved bread oven. The farmhouse is included on the list for group value.
