Description
Caroline Court, along with its attached walls and outbuilding, is a group of almshouses that were converted into flats for older people in 1969. They were originally built in 1797 for Caroline, Duchess of Marlborough. The building is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a hipped Welsh slate roof. It has a plan form that is not clearly defined.
The structure consists of two storeys and has a nine-bay range, with the central three bays set forward. In the center, there are three doorways, which have had windows inserted in 1969, framed by moulded stone architraves with fluted friezes above each cornice. Each outer wing has a central doorway, also with windows inserted in 1969, set in a keyed moulded architrave. Stone lintels are present over the 20th-century windows, and a plain medallion is placed above each outer door. The central bay features an apron with the inscription: "THESE ALMSHOUSES/WERE BUILT AND ENDOWED/BY CAROLINE DUCHESS/OF MARLBOROUGH/A.D. MDCCXCVII."
To the right of the building, there is a stone-coped limestone rubble wall, approximately 5 meters long, with a wooden gate. This wall is attached to a late 18th-century outhouse made of limestone rubble, which has a hipped Welsh slate roof and flat stone arches over two 20th-century doors to the left, as well as two 2-light wood-mullioned windows at the front. The rear wing, built in 1969, does not have special architectural interest.
