Description

The Village Stores and adjoining house is a building located on the east side of High Street in East Hendred. It dates back to the early 16th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century. The structure features a stone uncoursed rubble plinth and close-studded timber-framing with herringbone brick infill, topped by an old plain-tile roof. There is a brick ridge stack positioned to the left of the center.

Originally, it was likely a double-ended hall house. The building is two stories tall and has a four-window range. To the left of the center, there is a ribbed door with a gabled hood supported by brackets. To the right, a four-panel door features an overlight. The right side has 19th-century oriel shop windows, while the left side includes three-light casements with leaded lights. The first floor has jettied sections at the left and right end bays, with three-light casements featuring leaded lights on the first floor to the right and right of center. An oriel window on the left has arch-topped lights and a curved hipped old plain-tile roof. There are also blocked windows to the left of center and to the right. The cross-gables on the left and right have crown-post roof trusses with bracing and decorated barge boards. The interiors have not been inspected.
