Description
Stonehill House is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the 18th century. A date of 1737 is inscribed in the plasterwork of an attic bedroom, and the main structure likely received a brick casing in the late 18th century. Early 20th-century alterations and additions have also been made. The house is constructed of red brick, with random flared headers in a Flemish bond. It has a hipped roof covered in old plain tiles, with brick ridge stacks to the left and right returns of the original range. The original section is two storeys and an attic, with a five-window front. An early 20th-century, two-storey, two-bay addition sits to the left. The front door, located centrally, is a six-panel door with a decorative fan-light and a pedimented hood supported by moulded brackets. Early 20th-century windows, consisting of two lights with mullions and transoms, are present in all openings; those on the ground floor have segmental brick heads. A brick dentil course runs along the eaves. There are two hipped dormers with two-light casements in the roof. The interior features a dog-leg staircase with landings on both the ground floor and to the attic, positioned at the rear centre. Most rooms have panelled doors with 18th-century hinges. An attached outbuilding, partly a former stables and now garages, dates from the 17th century, was encased in the 18th century, and altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is a single-storey, nine-bay range constructed of brick, with old plain tile roofs of varying heights, and a wooden ventilation cowl to the left. The fenestration is irregular. The outbuilding is included for group value.
