Description
Lower Mill is a mill built in the late 18th century, which incorporates the wall of an earlier mill. It is constructed of brick in Flemish bond, with earlier uncoursed and squared chalk visible in the gable wall to the left and in the foundations. The mill has an old tiled roof and is arranged in an L-plan, with an additional store at right angles to the brick stack at the rear granary. The building has two storeys and features an irregular four-window range, with segmental arches above a plank door and casement windows. The gabled roof has a brick end stack, and there are remains of an overshot wheel against the gable end. The interior retains all beams, floorboards, and machinery. A two-bay, two-storey rear wing has leaded casements and a segmental arch with a limestone key block over double doors, which are partially blocked. There is also a small one-storey store made of uncoursed rubble of chalk and sarsen, topped with an old tile roof, located against the north wall.
