Description
Pear Tree Cottage and Suitsus Cottage are a pair of cottages dating from the early 17th century. They are constructed from chalk ashlar on a sarsen base, with Suitsus being white-washed. The cottages have thatched roofs and brick stacks. Each cottage has a two-unit plan and is 1.5 stories tall with a one-window range. There are timber lintels above two 20th-century ledged doors at the center, along with irregular 19th-century and early 20th-century casements. A mid to late 18th-century four-light leaded casement is located in the rear first-floor window. The right gable end of Suitsus was rebuilt in the early to mid-19th century, featuring brick bands and eaves. The roof is hipped with end stacks. Inside, Suitsus Cottage has chamfered beams with quirk and splay stops, an original plank and stud partition, and a four-bay collar-truss roof. The interior of Pear Tree Cottage has not been inspected but is reported to have similar features. There are 20th-century extensions at the rear.
