Description
Ashbury War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled in 1921, located on a green at a crossroads in the village of Ashbury, Oxfordshire. The memorial features a rough-hewn wheel-headed granite cross that sits on a tapering square plinth, which in turn stands on a two-stepped base.
On the front face of the cross, there is an inverted sword carved in relief, while the rear displays a bronze inverted sword, which is believed to have been added later when the names of those who fell in the Second World War were inscribed.
The front face of the plinth has a smoothed panel with lead lettering dedicated to the fallen of the First World War, reading: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919 (NAMES)." The rear face features a bronze plaque inscribed with "1939 – 1945 (NAMES) IN PROUD MEMORY." Additionally, on the top step at the rear of the memorial, there is another stone plaque engraved with "FALKLANDS 1982 (NAME)."
Each corner of the bottom step includes a rough-hewn granite flower holder.
