Description

The Elms and Triangle Cottage comprise a pair of cottages situated on the north side of High Street, Ashbury. The origins of Triangle Cottage date to the early 17th century, while The Elms is a 17th-century cottage with a later extension to the right. Originally named Triangle and Ash Tree Cottages, the buildings are constructed of squared and coursed chalk on a sarsen stone base; the rear of Triangle Cottage is timber-framed with chalk block and flint infill. They are roofed with thatch and have brick stacks. Triangle Cottage originally had a two-unit plan with a main entrance leading to the kitchen and then the living room, whereas The Elms is a single-unit cottage with a wider, single-bay extension to the east. The cottages are arranged as 1 1/2 storeys, with 2 storeys to the right, and display a 6-window range. Timber lintels are above the 20th-century doors and casements, and there are two late 19th-century dormers at the rear of The Elms. The roof features ridge and end stacks. Inside Triangle Cottage, there are chamfered beams with quirk and tongue stops. The Elms displays cyma stops to the beams, and a collar-truss roof with butt purlins. Late 20th-century lean-to and flat roof extensions have been added to the rear.
