Description
The Old Vicarage is a vicarage that has been converted into a house. It dates from the mid to late 17th century and was extended around 1805. The original 17th-century building is constructed from squared and coursed chalk, while the early 19th-century extension is made of rendered chalk block with brick dressings. The roof is slate, and there are roughcast stacks.
The building has a complex plan, featuring a three-storey section from the 17th century and a two-storey, three-window range extension from the early 19th century. The extension has a central six-panelled door with a scrolled pediment and a Doric portico, which was built by Sir William Cash in 1936. There are rubbed brick arches above the sash windows and brick double pilaster strips at the quoins. The eaves and verge are modillioned, and the roof is hipped with ridge stacks.
To the right, there is a two-storey, three-bay service wing that was substantially rebuilt around 1974 in Flemish bond brick, featuring 20th-century sash windows. The 17th-century building has flat chalk arches with voussoirs over the original leaded lights, retaining all its fittings. The interior has not been inspected but is noted to include shutters and doors, moulded cornices, and fireplaces.
