Description

Westbrook Cottage is a house dating from the early 18th century, which was remodelled around 1880. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with a Welsh slate roof and brick stacks. The house follows a three-unit lobby-entry plan. Originally a single storey with an attic, the bay to the left was heightened to two storeys around 1880, and has a three-window front. A late 19th-century four-panelled door, with two glazed panes, is set within a gabled brick porch. There are 20th-century timber lintels over an inserted door to the right, and flanking three-light casement windows. Two late 19th-century dormers are positioned above, both containing late 19th-century two- and three-light casements. The left-hand bay has timber lintels over a horned sash window, a one-light window, and a flat stone arch over a 20th-century three-light casement. The roof is gabled, with two gable end stacks and a ridge stack. Inside, the left side of the central room, which was originally two rooms, retains an axial chamfered beam and a chamfered bressumer over an open fireplace. The room contains a full set of chamfered and stopped beams and joists, as well as a chamfered bressumer over an open fireplace to the left. The roof is supported by a collar-truss structure.
