Description

The Almshouses, built in 1820, are located on Church Street in Sutton Courtenay. They feature a red brick plinth and grey brick with red brick dressings, topped with a slate hipped roof that has lead ridges. The structure is a single-storey, 13-bay range. The central bay has a round-arched recess with a keystone and stone impost blocks. To the left, there is a plank door, and to the right of the centre, there are two plank doors, all adorned with flat brick arches that have keystones. Each opening contains 16-pane unhorned sash windows, also with flat brick arches and keystones. The centre three bays have a shaped parapet, featuring a central plaque with pediment gables and flanking urns. The interiors have not been inspected.

To the left of the almshouses is an attached brick wall, while the front has stone coursed rubble walls and a brick wall to the right, creating a courtyard. This courtyard is accessed through a wrought-iron central gate with an overthrow, flanked by piers made of grey brick with red brick dressings. The inscribed panel on the building states, "These cottages were erected Anno Domini 1820, pursuant to the will of Francis Elderfield Esq., late of this parish, who endowed the same for ever for the maintenance of six poor widows, parishioners of Sutton Courtney."
