Description

Upton Manor House is a manor house, later adapted as a house, dating from the 17th century with early 18th-century additions, and with alterations to the windows in the late 18th century. The building has a knapped flint plinth, with the right side constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, and the left side and upper part of the first floor on the right constructed of red brick with flared headers in a Flemish bond pattern. It has an old plain-tile cross-gabled roof and various brick stacks. The building is two storeys high and originally had a 5-window front, now reduced to three. A 20th-century six-panel part-glazed door is centrally located, with an overlight and shaped hood supported by brackets. The ground and first floors to the left and right have 16-pane unhorned sash windows. A 9-pane horned sash window is found on the first floor centre. A moulded brick band runs between the ground and first floors. The original fenestration with flat brick arches and blocked openings is still visible. Tile-hung cross-gables are on the left and right. The right return has a two-storey projecting bay, which may have been a former porch, featuring 20th-century glazed doors to the right and a varied arrangement of sash windows. Inside, there is an early 18th-century dog-leg staircase with a wood baluster balustrade and wood-panelled dado, and a later early 19th-century straight-flight staircase with a stick balustrade. Open fireplaces are present on the ground floor of the right side. A mid to late 19th-century addition, two storeys high and two windows wide, is located to the left.
