Description
Cob Cottage and the adjoining cottage are two cottages built in the late 16th century and early 18th century. Cob Cottage features chalk rubble brought to course, while the adjoining cottage is made of uncoursed sarsen rubble with bands of chalk block, and has squared and coursed chalk on the rear gabled wall. Both cottages have thatched roofs and brick stacks. Cob Cottage has a single-unit plan, while the adjoining cottage has an L-shaped plan, and both are one and a half stories tall. The front has a three-window range with late 20th century doors. The cottage on the right is entered from the rear and has late 19th century to early 20th century two-light casements and one three-light wood mullioned and moulded casement. Cob Cottage has stacks on its end wall and the rear gabled wall of the adjoining cottage, which also has a gabled roof. The rear of Cob Cottage features a late 20th century lean-to extension, and a bread oven projects from the rear wall of the adjoining cottage. Inside Cob Cottage, there is a chamfered beam with a quirk and tongue stop and an open fireplace. The interior of the adjoining cottage has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.
