Description

Stainswick Farmhouse is a 17th century building with early 18th century additions, extensively altered in the 19th century. It is constructed of rubble stone with some roughcast, dressed stone quoins, and features a Bradstone tiled gabled roof at the east and a half hipped roof at the west, with end brick stacks on the 17th century range and original stone tiled roofs on the later additions. The farmhouse has a principal south front that was extended to the east and to the rear, creating an irregular rectangular plan. It is two storeys high with an attic. The south front features a three-window range from the original 17th century front and a two-bay range to the east from the 18th century. The third bay of the original front has a 19th century gable in the upper storey, and both the 17th and 18th century sections include a 19th century polygonal bay window on the ground floor. The remaining windows are 20th century casements, except for two hipped dormers in the roof. There is a late 19th century stone porch leading to a panelled door in the fourth bay from the left. The east wall has two porthole windows above a 20th century conservatory. A small bread oven, made of rubble stone with a stone tiled roof, projects from the northeast wall at the rear. The farmhouse is situated on an elevated circular site surrounded by a ha-ha.
