Description
Malthus Schoolhouse is a former school house, now a residential property, dated 1709. It is constructed of red brick with random flared headers in Flemish bond and features an old plain-tile roof with brick end stacks. The building has a double-depth plan and is two stories tall with a five-window range. The central entrance has a six-panel door surrounded by a wood architrave, an overlight, and a half-dome hood supported by richly-carved brackets. All openings have wood cross-windows with glazing bars, and the ground floor windows have segmental brick heads. There is a blind panel in the center of the first floor, which features an inscribed tablet that reads, "A Charity School built and endowed by the gift of William Malthus, merchant, Anno Domini 1709." A flat brick band runs between the ground and first floors, and there is a painted wood dentil cornice at the eaves. The interior has not been inspected. To the left, there is an early 19th-century addition that is a single-storey, single-window range, also made of red brick with flared headers in Flemish bond and an old plain-tile roof that is half-hipped to the left. This addition has a six-panel door to the left and a three-light wood casement window with a segmental brick head in the center.
