Description

Well Cottage is a group value example of almshouses, dating from around 1620 and originally built for Sir Francis Stonor. The building is constructed of flint rubble with brick quoins and dressings, and has a gabled roof covered in old tile. It is a one-storey building with an attic, featuring a seven-window front. The windows are 2-light casements, and the flat brick arches are above a C20 door, three blocked doorways, and the windows. Four C20 gabled dormers have been added to the roof. Interior alterations in 1978 revealed a 5-bay raised cruck framework, an open fireplace adjoining winder stairs, and stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops.
