Description

The Chequers is a public house dating from the early to mid-18th century. It is constructed of grey brick in header bond with red-brick dressings and some limestone rubble, topped with an old plain-tile roof featuring brick gable stacks. The building has a three-unit plan with extensions and stands two storeys plus an attic high. The main façade has a regular four-window arrangement, with a stepped plinth, a storey band, and a dentil eaves course. The windows are cross-windows set under gauged segmental arches. The entrance, originally located to the right of centre, has been blocked and shifted slightly to the left. The roof includes four gabled dormers, a gable stack on the right, and an added stack on the left. The dentil course wraps around the right gable, forming a pediment. To the right is a single-bay former stable, styled similarly with a half-hipped roof, which is now part of the public house, along with a single-storey outbuilding made of rubble, brick, and tile that projects from the extreme left of the front. A similar rubble wing extends to the rear. Inside, there are some stop-chamfered beams and joists, and the former stable features a clasped-purlin roof with curved inner principals.
