Description

The Innocents is a house built in the mid-17th century, with a 20th-century extension. It is constructed from colourwashed limestone rubble and features a thatched roof with brick gable stacks. The house has a two-unit central-stair plan that has been extended to the rear, and it stands two storeys tall with an attic.

The front of the house has three windows, with a wide, heavy-framed entrance located to the right of centre. Below this entrance is a small two-light stone-mullioned window with a label. To the left, there are four-light mullioned windows, while to the right, there are three-light windows, all of which have labels and leaded lights. The roof includes a small eyebrow dormer on the right, likely added in the 20th century, along with additional dormers and mullioned windows at the rear.

At the back, there is a two-storey rear wing and a small lean-to extension on the right. Inside, timber-framed partitions flank the central bay, which features a quarter-turn stair leading to the attic. The interior includes two ovolo-moulded beams, an open fireplace with ogee chamfer-stops on the bressumer, and a brick fireplace with a shallow chamfered arch in a chamfered rectangular recess, which also contains a bread-oven. There are two fireplaces on the first floor with cambered bressumers and old plank and panelled doors. The roof structure has two rows of straight wind braces, with purlins clasped over the partitions that abut intermediate braced-collar trusses.
