Description
The Church of St Leonard is a Grade II listed church located on South Stoke Road in Woodcote. It has 12th century foundations and was rebuilt in 1846 by H J Underwood. The building is constructed of flint with stone dressings and features a plain tile roof. It has a three-bay nave and chancel with an apse end, designed in the Romanesque Revival style.
The church has a gabled porch to the left of the center, which includes glazed 20th century double outer doors and a 19th century inner door with wrought iron hinges. The main doorway is round-arched and flanked by two orders of columns. The chancel has a plank door with wrought iron hinges and a round arched head, supported by a single order of columns. All openings are adorned with round-headed lancets, and there is a bellcote on the left-hand gable end.
Inside, the church features a Romanesque style font with a round column base and a square top, decorated with carved roundels on each side. The pulpit is also in the Romanesque style, with a round column base and a hexagonal top, each face featuring a blind round-headed arch supported on columns. Access to the pulpit is via spiral stone steps with a wrought iron balustrade. The chancel floor is laid with encaustic tiles, and the dado is formed of glazed embossed tiles. A wooden altar rail in the Romanesque style is present, along with an organ gallery at the west end, which has a Romanesque style balustrade.
The chancel contains a 19th century stained glass window by Powell and Sons, and verses from the Bible are painted over the nave windows. The roof features hammer beam trusses, making this church a notable example of the Romanesque Revival style.
