Description

The Priory is a house, likely dating from the 17th century, with significant remodelling in the early 18th century. It is constructed primarily of brick, with some timber framing, and has old plain-tile roofs and brick stacks. The house is arranged with a double-depth plan and is two storeys high plus attics. The front has a four-window arrangement, incorporating a storey band and a moulded brick dentil cornice. The windows are 12-pane sashes, originally under segmental arches, now with gauged-brick keystones and flat arches. Ground-floor windows have panelled shutters, and the central doorway features a four-panel door with an architrave and a flat canopy supported by shaped brackets. A window to the left of the door is a later restoration. The high parapet has two blocked openings. The right-hand end wall retains a segmental arch over a blind window. The rear side wall displays very fine brickwork, including a plinth, storey band, moulded cornice, rubbed and gauged flat keystone arches, and dressings in bright red brick with purple walling. This section also has pairs of sashes at ground and first floor levels. A one-bay return to the rear has a further sash window and a narrow blind panel. A gable end of the original timber-framed core is visible at the rear. The roof is complex and contains dormers hidden behind the parapets. A rear wing, an 18th century brick addition of three bays, features leaded casements of two and three lights with segmental arches. A timber-framed rear wall is also present. The interior has not been inspected.
