Description
Penguin Cottage is a row of four cottages located on the west side of Dorchester High Street. They are probably late medieval in origin but were altered in the 17th and 18th centuries. The cottages feature rendered timber framing and have thatch roofs with brick stacks. Each cottage has a single-unit plan and is one storey high with attics. The front of the building has four entrances, which include plank and four-panel doors, as well as a passage entrance with a stable door. The windows are primarily small-pane casements, except for No. 17, which has sash windows and a pair of panelled shutters. The first-floor windows are mostly half dormers. Notably, the unit to the left of centre, No. 15, has a higher ground-floor level. The interiors have not been inspected, but they are noted to be at least partly cruck framed.
