Description
The chest tomb to the Phillips family, dating from around 1736, is located approximately 10 meters north of the Church of St. Andrew in East Hagbourne. It features a white marble chest set on a stone stepped base, with a grey marble top. The tomb is rectangular in shape and has a moulded base. The sides include central oval panels surrounded by ornate, deeply carved shell designs. The corners are recessed and decorated with palm leaf carvings at the base. The grey marble top has a cyma reversa and cyma recta moulded edge. Surrounding the tomb are railings with decorative shaped tops and vase-top finials at the corners. An inscription on the oval panel facing the church reads: "Here lyeth the body of Thomas Phillips, sone of Matthew Phillips, of this parish. Whose known skill and diligence in his profession, joined with great probity in his dealings gave him that reputation in business which recommended him to be Carpenter to their Majesties, King George the First and King George the Second. He died the 14th day of August 36, aged 47 years...."
