Description

Countess Gardens, located at 86 and 88 Bell Street, is a notable 18th-century building constructed of silver grey brick with red quoins and window dressings. It features a plain string course at the first floor level and a moulded string at the second floor level. The original cornice has been removed and replaced with a plastered string. The old tiled roof is concealed by a parapet. The building stands three storeys tall and has six windows with segmental arches, along with external panelled shutters on the ground floor windows.

The entrance includes an arched door with a fanlight, framed by a wooden surround with square fluted engaged columns that support an architrave, bracketed cornice, and a pediment with a Doric frieze. Additionally, there is a round arched door with a simple radial fanlight on the south side of No 86.

Countess Gardens is part of a group of buildings that includes Nos 70 to 102 (even), the building at the rear of Nos 70 and 72, Nos 93 and 95 opposite, and Nos 1 to 11 (odd) and 15 to 25 (odd), along with Denmark House, Elm House, Ruperts Elm, Ruperts Guard, White House, the Obelisk, No 30 Northfield End, and Tarry's Cottage, Bell Cottage, and the Flat on Rupert's Lane.
