Description
The Church of St John the Baptist is a church built in 1852 by Arthur Billing, with a vestry added in 1894. It is constructed of knapped flint with stone dressings and has a plain tile roof. The church features a 4-bay nave with an apse, designed in the Early English style. There is a gabled porch to the right of the center, which includes a 2-centred arched doorway with a glazed 20th-century double door. Each bay has a single lancet window, except for the left bay, which has a paired lancet. The octagonal apse has a lancet window on each face, and the west end features two lancet windows with a quatrefoil window above. The south side also has lancet windows. The vestry is built in a similar style and has a catslide roof. The nave has a gabled roof, while the apse has a hipped roof and a bellcote on the west end gable.
Inside, there is a stone octagonal font with carved panels on marble columns with a stepped base. A stone pulpit with Salviati mosaic panels is located to the left of the apse arch, and an organ with painted decoration on the pipes is to the right. There is a piscina to the left of the altar and sedilia to the right. The reredos features blind trefoil arches on three sides of the apse, and the apse floor is adorned with ornamental glazed faience tiles. The nave has a wooden truss roof, while the apse has a painted brick vault with decorated ribs. This small church is noted for its good fittings.
