Description
Fair Mile Hospital is a lunatic asylum, now functioning as a hospital, which was built in 1870, as indicated by a carved panel above the main door. The architect was C.H. Howell, with additions made by G.T. Hind in 1898, along with some alterations and additions from the 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick, featuring some stone dressings and grey brick courses with decorative diapering. It has a complex Welsh slate roof with lead ridges and various red brick chimney stacks.
The hospital has a complex symmetrical plan and is three stories high, with an 18-window range and towers. The central entrance features a panelled door set within a stone Tudor archway that has carved trefoils in the spandrels. To the left, there is a prominent five-storey tower with a hipped roof. The central block has stone mullion windows, as well as mullion and transom windows, while the wings contain four-pane sash windows. The interior has not been inspected.
