Description

The following buildings shall be included:

CHOLSEY READING ROAD (A329) (East side) Nos 49, 51 and 53 SU 58 NE 2/118 II

3 cottages c1839. Probably by I K Brunel. Red brick with flint front and stone dressings. Gabled and hipped roof, probably Welsh slate under late C20 coating. Red brick stacks with diagonally-placed flues to right valley, left end and rear. Simple Tudor style. 2-storey, 3-window, range of 2-light stone- mullion windows with 3-light to 1st floor centre. This and ground floor windows have hood moulds. Central gable with loop-hole below apex projects slightly and is defined by stone quoins. Moulded string courses to both floors, and low parapet to side bays. Part-glazed doors to centre left and far right. Further windows, doors and extension to rear. Cottages were built by G.W.R. to house possibly the stableman and porter at the Wallingford Road, later Moulsford, Station. (A. Vaughan: Great Western Architecture: 1977, p196).
