Description
Wellhouse and winding gear, built around the mid to late 19th century. The structure is square in shape and features low walls made of red brick and flint panels, decorated with brick diaperwork. Brick buttresses at the corners support thin brick piers that hold up a pyramidal roof, which is covered in plain tiles and bands of scalloped tiles. At the top of the roof, there is a wooden spike finial, and wrought-iron fleur-de-lis adorn the corners. The sides of the wellhouse are open above the low walls; the southwest side has an iron grille, while the southeast side is completely open, providing access to the well. The iron winding gear remains intact and is mounted on a wooden frame. An inscription on the gear identifies the maker as R.J. and H. Wilders of Patent Wallingford, Berkshire. The well itself is 300 feet deep and is depicted on the 1873 Ordnance Survey map.
