Description
The Harcourt Arms Inn is an inn that dates from the mid-18th century and was altered and extended in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of brick in Flemish bond, featuring some flared headers, and has an old plain-tile roof with brick stacks. The building has an H-plan shape and consists of two storeys plus an attic. The front facade is made of chequer brick, with a stepped plinth, a storey band, and a dentil eaves course. It has projecting wings and a central range with four windows; the ground floor has two leaded cross windows, while the first floor has two-light casements. The wings feature similar windows positioned towards their inner corners, with the first floor windows being blind, and the inward-facing return walls also have a first floor casement. All windows are topped with segmental arches.
The left bay of the main range includes an entrance with an architrave, a flat canopy supported by shaped brackets, and a rectangular overlight. The right inner angle features a large glazed wooden porch supported by Doric columns. The roofs are hipped, and there are two hipped roof dormers in the central range. The right return wall has been extended by one bay and includes some mid-19th century rubbed-brick flat arches, retaining a cross window at the extreme left. The left return wall also displays some rubbed-brick flat arches. The building marks the northern end of the village street, balancing the former smithy (Brewers of Nuneham Ltd.). It is part of the estate village built around 1760 for the 1st Earl Harcourt.
