Description
Guys and Guys Cottage is a 17th-century farmhouse, later altered in the late 18th century, situated on Water Lane in Drayton St Leonard. It was formerly known as Drayton Farmhouse and Drayton House. The building exhibits a mix of materials and construction techniques. The ground floor on the left side is painted brick, while a cross-wing to the left of the centre is built from un-coursed stone rubble. The first floor to the left and centre is timber-framed with painted brick infill, and the right side is red brick in a Flemish bond with flared headers. The roof is covered with old plain tiles, and there are brick stacks – a 20th-century internal stack to the left of the centre, a ridge stack in the centre, and an end stack to the right. The house has two storeys and a seven-window front. A two-panelled door is positioned at the centre. The windows are mainly two-light wooden casements, with segmental brick heads over those on the ground floor. The cross-wing to the left of the centre has a cross-gable with a Queen post roof truss, while a cross-gable is also present to the right of the centre. The left return gable end has a double Queen post roof truss. Inside, the ground floor features chamfered spine beams. A winder staircase is located at the rear left of the house, ascending from the ground floor to the first floor.
