Description

This is a mid-17th century house with later alterations, located on the south side of The Street in Brightwell Cum Sotwell. The house is constructed of mixed stone and brick, with a limestone facade, brick dressings to the ground floor, timber framing with brick infill above, and an old plain-tile roof with a hipped left side and brick end stacks. It has a 5-window facade over two storeys. A ribbed wooden door is set within an open-gabled porch at the centre. The ground floor windows are 3-light leaded casements with brick hoods to the left and right, with a single-light leaded casement with a brick hood to the left of centre. The first floor has irregular groupings of leaded casements. The interior of the house has not been inspected. To the right of the house is a wall constructed of knapped flint with red brick dressings and angled brick coping. A datestone from 1695 is located to the left, and a datestone to the right is inscribed “William Dobson VII of June (?) MDCCIC.” The wall is approximately 2 metres high and forms three sides of a rectangular enclosure, roughly 65 metres long to the right return and 22 metres long to the rear.
