Description

19-23 Couching Street is a house and two cottages dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with a remodel in the early 18th century. Originally timber-framed, the early 18th-century front features colourwashed brick on the left bay and Flemish bond brick with flared headers. The building has a gabled old tile roof with 20th-century tile bands, a 17th-century brick ridge stack, and a brick end stack. The structure has a three-unit plan that was extended in the early 18th century to form an L-plan with a rear right range.

The building is two storeys high with a three-window range. There is a central 20th-century door flanked by windows: late 19th-century two-light casements and two horizontal sliding sashes above and to the right, along with a raised storey band. An early 19th-century eight-pane sash is located at the far right. No. 19, to the left, features a 19th-century six-panelled door (two glazed), a 20th-century casement, and a storey band, with an outshut at the rear. The early 18th-century rear wing is one storey and attic, with a four-window range made of English bond brick, a gabled old tile roof, and brick ridge stacks. It has timber lintels and segmental arches over 19th and 20th-century casements and two doors.

Inside, there are ogee-stopped beams and a chamfered bressumer over an open fireplace to the right. The rear wall is timber-framed, and the first-floor partitions are also timber-framed, with the roof likely to be of interest but not inspected. No. 23 in the rear wing has an 18th-century plank door leading to quarter-turn stairs. No. 19 was not inspected but is likely to be of interest.
