Description

The ice house, located approximately 40 meters north of Ascott Park Farmhouse, is a structure likely built in the early 18th century, incorporating some earlier features. It is constructed of brick in Flemish bond with limestone dressings and has a thatched roof. The building has an octagonal plan, consisting of two storeys plus a basement.

The entrance features a four-centre arched stone doorway with ovolo mouldings, recessed spandrels, and a label. Below this is a similar three-centre arched basement doorway, which lacks a label and is accessed by a flight of brick steps. On three other walls, there are two-light stone-mullioned windows with concave chamfers and labels, which may date back to the 16th century, while the doorways are likely from the early 17th century. The roof is an octagonal pyramidal shape.

Inside, the walls are primarily in header bond, with segmental rear arches to the windows that cut across the chamfers. The first floor structure has been removed, and the roof structure is from the 20th century. The basement features an octagonal brick saucer dome. This ice house is part of the former formal gardens of Ascott Park, which is listed in the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission County Registers of Gardens at Grade II.
