Description
Ascott Park Cottage is a farmhouse that likely dates back to the 16th century and has undergone significant alterations. The building features rendered timber framing, brick, and limestone rubble, topped with a plain-tile roof and brick gable stacks. It is designed in a T-plan and stands two storeys tall.
The front of the cottage includes, to the right, a Tudor-arched stone doorway with recessed spandrels and a central keyblock, which retains its original studded plank door. There is a central three-light casement window with a two-light casement window above it. To the left, the projecting gable wall of the cross wing has rubble at the ground floor and some rendered timber framing above, along with a projecting chimney. A post remains in the angle of this projecting wing.
On the extreme right, within an outbuilding, there are remnants of additional bays from the original house, including a massive open fireplace that survives on the right gable wall of the existing structure. The rear of the cottage features more casement windows, and the first floor of the cross wing is finished in rendered timber framing. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is noted to contain panelling.
Surrounding the cottage are brick garden walls to the northeast, built in English bond, with a chamfered plinth and sections of two-course stone coping with apex roll. The cottage is likely an ancillary building of the now-destroyed Ascott House. Ascott Park is also recognized in the HBMC County Register of Gardens at Grade II.
