Description

The Abbey is a house dating from the early 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the 18th and early 19th centuries. It is constructed of squared coursed lias and brick in English bond and Flemish bond, topped with a slate roof featuring stone ridge stacks and brick end stacks on stone bases. The building likely originally had an L-shaped plan and consists of two storeys plus an attic. The façade has a three-window range of three-light casements set within rendered Dutch gables, which are probably from the 19th century. The central entrance features a panelled and glazed door surrounded by fluted pilasters and topped with a dentilled pediment. The right gable end displays two large stacks made of 17th and 18th-century brick in English bond, with offsets and stone coping. At the rear, there are 18th-century sash windows and a panelled and glazed door. Inside, the ground floor includes large spine beams with stepped stops and a large open fireplace. The roof features a 17th-century queen-post design, with some joiners' numerals visible. There is also a 17th-century straight-flight baluster staircase, along with some 17th-century plank doors in the attic and several 18th-century cupboards throughout the building.
