Description

Knapp Farmhouse, now a house, is an early to mid 18th-century farmhouse located on White Street in Market Lavington. It is constructed of brick in Flemish bond, with stone quoins and dressings, and features tiled roofs. The building has two storeys, a cellar, and attics, and is designed in an 'L' plan with a mid-19th-century block in the re-entrant angle.

The west facade consists of five bays, with a central entrance featuring a cross-boarded door faced in early 19th-century style, framed by a panelled surround and a stone flat canopy supported by brackets. Above the entrance is an inserted stone segmental fanlight. The facade includes a plat band and similar stone surrounds with flat entablatures for the twelve-pane sash windows. The eaves are moulded stone, and there are two-light earlier 18th-century gable windows in the attic with iron leaded casements, along with two hipped dormers.

At the rear, there are external stacks serving the main rooms. The left rear wing is single storey and attic, raised to two storeys, with four bays featuring three segmental-headed windows and an early 18th-century sash in the fourth bay. The south side of the wing has early 19th-century twelve-pane casements.

Inside, there are mid-19th-century fireplaces, but a large blocked fireplace in the left parlour may have been the original kitchen. Another large blocked fireplace in the rear wing is likely an addition. The attic landing features moulded muntin panelling, and the roof has double butt purlins. There is also a segmental brick vaulted cellar that runs the full length of the main block. The building is set on a raised terrace to the farmyard on the north side, which has a brick parapet and weathered stone coping.
