Description

No 25, known as Broadwell Leigh, is a house located on White Street in Market Lavington. It dates from the mid-16th to 17th century and features a timber-framed structure with wattle and daub infill and a thatched roof. The building is single storey with an attic and consists of five bays, including a two-bay core with a lateral stack that has been subdivided. At the rear, there is a chamber that has been converted into a dining room, which includes a 19th-century inserted stack.

There are additional extensions, likely from the 19th century, that house the kitchen and service rooms. The gable end facing the street has been rebuilt, creating a subdivision of the main hall to form a study with its own entry and stack. The doors are boarded and feature pent roofs. The original structure displays small square framing on the upper floor, while the framing in the rear bay has been partially replaced with brick. The windows are timber casements, and the rebuilt gable end has a lean-to roof with paned windows.

Inside, there is said to be a cruck truss between the hall and the inner bay, although this is now interrupted by the 19th-century stack. The original cross beam in the hall features bar and octagon chamfer stops, while the upper floor has a simple chamfer. A lateral fireplace has been blocked by a partition between the hall and the study, situated under the cross beam, which includes scoop and check stops.
