Description

No. 55 High Street is a house dating from 1610, with an extension from the 18th century. It features timber framing with rendered infill set on a plinth of clunch rubble, along with limestone ashlar and brick. The roof is covered with old plain tiles and has brick stacks. The house has a two-unit plan and includes a rear outshut. It stands two storeys tall, plus attics, and has a six-window front that is double-jettied. The front displays moulded bressumers and scroll brackets that are carved with acanthus leaves and Ionic capitals.

On the ground and first floors, large leaded casements have replaced oriels, for which mortices are still visible. At the first floor, these casements are flanked by high-level, three-light ovolo-moulded mullion windows, which were restored in the 20th century and feature diamond glazing. The ground floor has similar windows only on the inner sides, along with an inserted four-panel door located at the extreme right. The inscription "1610/IH" is found on a stud. A large stack with four diagonal shafts rises from the roof slope above the central bay. To the left, there is a single-storey extension from the 20th century. The outshut is made of brick on an ashlar lower storey and includes dormers. The interior has not been inspected.
