Description
Ickford Bridge, along with Whirlpool Arch Bridge, is a river bridge located partly in Buckinghamshire and partly in South Oxfordshire District, Oxfordshire. It dates back to the medieval period, with alterations made in 1685, as well as changes in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Whirlpool Arch, which is part of the structure, was added around 1800. The bridge is constructed of coursed rubble with ashlar arches and dressings. It features three arches with a causewayed southern approach. The north arch is depressed, while the central arch is 4-centred. There are wide cut waters with parapet refuges between the northern two arches, and a buttress on a plinth with weathered coping situated between the central and south arches. The parapet copings are chamfered. On the south side, in the eastern refuge, there is a stone inscribed with "Here Begineth the County of Bucks 1685" and "1685 Here ends the County of Oxon." At the north end of the causeway on the Buckinghamshire side, there is the Whirlpool Arch bridge, which features a segmental arch made of ashlar with rubblestone parapets and chamfered ashlar copings.
