Description

The Close is a house that dates back to the 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th century. It features a timber-framed structure with plaster infill on the northeast wing and the north gable, while the remainder is covered in roughcast. The southwest wing is built from rubblestone, which is also colourwashed and roughcast, topped with old tile roofs.

The building has a two-storey southwest wing with an attic, while the rest is one and a half storeys. It has a north-south range consisting of three bays, a two-bay southwest wing, and a one-bay northeast wing, creating a square 'Z' plan. The north-south range includes small windows on the gable elevation and a 17th-century stack. The west side features an entry under a tiled roof porch, a three-light leaded window to the left, and a hipped eaves dormer above. The late 17th-century plaster quoins and eaves are notable details.

The northeast wing has a door, leaded casements, and a central three-light swept eaves dormer with a gable stack. The timber framing is exposed at the rear. The late 17th-century southwest wing contains a three-light leaded casement on the first floor, with 17th-century plaster quoins and a two-light gabled dormer. There is a stack on the left and a projecting stone stack on the right with two brick diamond flues.

Inside, the north stack features a chamfered fireplace lintel with brick jambs and newel stairs to the left. There are chamfered spine beams throughout. The right-hand fireplace in the southwest wing has a chamfered lintel on stone jambs, with a spine beam that has moulded chamfer stops.
