Description

The Old Wharf is an early 18th-century house, with a section likely dating to the late 17th century, located on Warborough Wharf Road, Shillingford. The building is constructed of coursed clunch rubble with brick dressings, topped with an old plain-tile roof and brick stacks. It comprises a two-unit double-depth main range with projecting cross wings. The main range and a wing to the right have brick quoins, and some ground-floor windows are framed by segmental arches with blue brick headers. Entrances are in the gable wall of the wing and to the extreme left of the main range. The front gables of the cross wings are rendered. The left cross wing, probably from the late 17th century, has a stepped brick plinth; its brick-quoined windows have been altered and now have rendered surrounds. A slightly later section of this wing at the rear displays brick quoins and a timber-framed rear gable with brick infill. The central range bears a brick inscription reading "RC 1726" and displays a Sun Insurance plaque. Ridge stacks on the main range are positioned in line with the entrance and towards the right end. Internally, there are large back-to-back open fireplaces with chamfered bressumers and an adjoining entrance lobby. A rubble and brick wall returns from the left wing along the road, incorporating brick piers with ball finials and wrought-iron double gates.
