Description
1 and 2 Brewer Street is a house consisting of two buildings. The main east block was built in 1596, while the west block was constructed by Oliver Smith, likely in the early 17th century, and has since been rebuilt. An early 18th century addition is present on the east side, along with modern additions, including the upper part of the west block.
On the north elevation, the east block features two stories of ashlar stone with cellars and attics, a stone slate roof, and a moulded stone cornice with a parapet above. It has stone stacks and some original two-light "Tudor" windows with square labels and a continuous moulding along the front. The 18th century wooden doorframe has a bracketed hood with a dentilled cornice. The west block has a rebuilt three-story stuccoed front on a stone base, a machine-tile roof, and brick stacks, with modern three-light casement windows. There is a projecting wing at the back on the south side.
The interior includes original stone fireplaces, an early 17th century plastered ceiling in the west block, and 18th century panelling.
