Description

The East and West Blocks and Walled Garden at Rannas date from the mid to late 18th century. They consist of a pair of formerly mirrored two-storey, five-bay blocks that feature a central projecting stairwell flanked by doorways, facing each other and surrounding the front court of a mansion that has since been demolished. The buildings are constructed with pinned rubble and have tooled ashlar dressings.

The East Block was converted into a dwelling in the later 19th century. It has a canted window that projects at the southwest corner, and two gabled dormers that break the wallhead in the outer front bays, with three more at the rear. The windows have four-pane glazing. The roof is a later 19th century gabled slate roof with projecting eaves, featuring gabled end stacks and a single rear wallhead stack.

The West Block has a symmetrical five-bay east front, with entrances flanking the central stair projection. It has a regular three-window arrangement in the west elevation, with all windows margined. The roof is piended with local slate and has stone ridges, along with coped end stacks.

The interior of both blocks is in poor condition, with remnants of a former kitchen on the ground floor and a large room with a combed ceiling on the first floor. A cantilevered staircase remains in the stairwell.

The walled garden is L-shaped, located to the east and north of the complex, enclosing the site of the former mansion. It is built of rubble with a tooled cope and features a large round-headed entrance arch on the west side.
