Description
Upper Woods Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early to mid 17th century, with an extension from the 18th century. It is constructed of limestone rubble and features wooden lintels, with a roof made of Stonesfield slate and old plain tiles, topped with a brick ridge stack. The building has a two-unit lobby-entry plan that has been extended to three units and stands two storeys high plus an attic.
The main façade has two windows and a central doorway framed with a heavy chamfered frame and a stop-chamfered lintel. To the left of the doorway is a 2-light casement window from the 18th or 19th century, while to the right is an original 4-light casement window with an ovolo-moulded frame. On the first floor, there are two 4-light casements flanking a small central window. The roof features a large central stack with four diagonal shafts that have corbelled caps. An added bay to the left has a lower roof, and the gable walls have blocked windows.
At the rear, the earlier range has been altered at ground floor level but retains two 3-light casements with heavy frames on the first floor, along with a small central dormer that has a leaded casement. Inside, there is a massive central stack with back-to-back fireplaces, one of which is open while the other is blocked. The interior also features stop-chamfered beams and old plank doors.
